Make your own diaper!

Welcome to Inca's cloth diaper site!

I have been using disposable diapers for my son since he was a baby. Now he just got a little sister. She is 5 months old and I have finally been converted to cloth. Wonder what took me so long. Clothdiapering is funny and much easier than it sounds when you first read about it.

But WHY clothdiaper - when disposables are so easy?

There are loads of reasons to cloth diaper. Many women start because it is a good choice for the environment. When choosing cloth diapers you re-use your diapers again and again. That way you can save money since you only need to buy a diaper once - and then it can be used over and over - and even be used for more than one child. And the more popular brands can be sold on when you are done using them.

For me the main reason is the feel! It just feels so nice to touch the soft diapers. They are so well made and I like to turn them over in my hands and feel how soft they are. I like to put them on my daughters little behind and see her wearing soft cotton rather than stiff paper. Personally I wouldn't like wearing that stiff paper on me every day - and I figure neither will my daughter if given a choice.

My son who has always been in disposables (and still is most of the time as I have not invested in many toddler-diapers yet) and he really likes when I occasionally put him in a clothdiaper. He has one with bats on it (from Ellas House) and he loves it. Plan is to use CDs for him too and I am slowly increasing my "toddler-diaper-stock".

Another thing I like about clothdiapers is that my daughter just looks so sweet in cloth... You can get all kinds of colors and patterns and there will always be one that you like better than all the others because it just fits well - or maybe because you just like the way it is made..

I am new to clothdiapering and I figure in the long run I wont be saving money - simply because I like to buy new ones..

How to try it out?

It really is as simple as getting a diaper and getting a cover - and then you are a clothdiapering mama! Ofcourse once you have gotten that first diaper and cover - then you will want to get more and more.. and before you know it - you are an addict too - believe it or not!

Many internet cloth nappy-stores will allow you to buy a trial kit with for instance 3 different diapers and a cover so you can try it out and see what kind of diaper you prefer.

If you plan on clothdiapering then I can recommend that you really try out different brands since they are very different in quality and fits. There are cons and pros to all types of clothdiaper and you will soon get favourites. That is why I would not recommend you to buy one of those "birth to potty" kits that some manufacturers and shops offer.

Making Cloth Diapers

If you think it is expensive to buy clothdiapers then you can make your own. With a bit of effort then you can make them just as well as the ones you can buy. All you need is a sewingmachine and then you can use old t-shirts, sheets and towels to make your diapers practically without ever having to pay for anything but thread, elastic and possibly some poppers or aplix..

One of my favourite diapers is the Diddy Diaper by Nature Babies. I have tried to make my own diaper similar to the Diddy Diaper and you can see my instructions here. I have tried to make the instructions easy to follow even for newbie sewers - like me

Is it difficult to make your own diapers?

I am new to making my own cloth diapers and I have no sewing experience whatsoever - so if I can do it - then so can you.
